Western Bays Community Board
The Western Bays community and ward occupies a small pocket in the north-western corner of the city, immediately west
of the central business district. It overlooks the inner Waitemata Harbour and contains the suburbs of Pt. Chevalier,
Grey Lynn, Westmere, Ponsonby, Arch Hill, St. Marys Bay, Herne Bay and Freemans Bay.
With a population of 36,000, the Western Bays community is one of the city’s most vibrant. Within its boundaries are
the Western Springs Lakeside Park, Auckland Zoo, Western Park, the Museum of Transport and Technology and Victoria
Park and Market. It is also well endowed with cafes and restaurants, particularly on Ponsonby and Jervois Roads.
There are both community libraries and community centres at Pt. Chevalier, Grey Lynn and Ponsonby (Leys Institute).
