MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE
WAIHEKE COMMUNITY BOARD

OBITUARIES

Chairperson Ray Ericson advised of the recent passing of Mr Kato Kauwhata, the Piritahi Marae kaumatua, on 11 November 2007. A minutes silence was observed and those present sang a whakaaria mai.

    4.1. RINSKE RYDER - BARBECUE AT SHELLY BEACH

    Rinske Ryder, resident of Shelly Beach Road, presented the Board with a petition of 51 signatures regarding the construction of a barbecue and a seawall on Shelly Beach Reserve.  A copy of the petition was tabled at the meeting.

    4.2. BRENTLY FORD - CONCERNS AT SHELLY BEACH RESERVE

    Brently Ford, resident of Shelly Beach Road, spoke to the Board regarding his proposal to build a hut on Shelly Beach Reserve, to re-establish the walking track on the southern side of the reserve, and the problems of beach erosion on the reserve.

    4.3. DENIS POWELL - FRIENDS OF THE OKAHUITI WETLANDS

    Denis Powell, Friends of the Okahuiti Wetlands, provided an update for the Board on the progress of the memorial in honour of the late Jacqui Barrington, to invite Board Members to attend the unveiling ceremony planned for Monday 3 December 2007, at 9.30am, and to speak against the proposal for a barbecue on Shelly Beach Reserve.

    That Denis Powell, Friends of the Okahuiti Wetlands, be thanked for his presentation to the Waiheke Community Board regarding the memorial in honour of the late Jacqui Barrington, for his invitation to Board Members to attend to unveiling ceremony planned for Monday 3 December 2007, at 9.30am, and voicing his concerns about a community barbecue on Shelly Beach Reserve.

    4.4. MATTHEW TETLEY-JONES - WAIHEKE COMMUNITY RADIO TRUST

    Matthew Tetley-Jones, representing the Waiheke Community Radio Trust, spoke to the Board in support of the provision of a community lease for premises at the Artworks Centre to be used as a radio station.

    1. That Matthew Tetley-Jones, Waiheke Community Radio Trust, be thanked for his presentation to the Waiheke Community Board requesting support for the provision of a community lease for premises at the Artworks Centre to be used as a radio station.

    2. That the Waiheke Community Board supports in principle the establishment of a radio station on Waiheke, and request that the appropriate officers investigate the Waiheke Community Radio Trust leasing a venue at the Artworks Centre with limited lease provisions.

    Emma McDonald, Managing Director, Eventi Limited, spoke to the Board regarding the proposed Waiheke Wine and Food Festival in March 2008 at the Onetangi Recreation Grounds.

    4.7. LYN PRICE AND JOHN GIFFORD - TREE ISSUES ON GLENBROOK ROAD

    Lyn Price and John (Jacko) Gifford, Glenbrook Road, Rocky Bay, spoke to the Board regarding the lopsided growth of two mature puriri trees and one taraire tree growing on the berm between 43 and 49 Glenbrook Road, and other scruffy trees in that same area.

    1. That Lyn Price and John (Jacko) Gifford, Glenbrook Road, Rocky Bay, be thanked for their presentation to the Waiheke Community Board regarding the lopsided growth on three trees growing on the berm between 43 and 49 Glenbrook Road, Rocky Bay.

    2. That the Chairman and the Trees Spokesperson meet with relevant officers at 43 - 49 Glenbrook Road, Rocky Bay, to discuss the removal and/or pruning of the trees on the council berm.

    4.8. PAUL WALDEN - MANAGING DIRECTOR, PAUL WALDEN HOME SERVICES LIMITED

    Paul Walden, Managing Director, Paul Walden Home Services Limited, spoke to the Board regarding the classification of boats and trailers on the causeway and the removal of those that are abandoned, derelict or do not belong to the Waiheke Boat Club.

    1. That Paul Walden, Managing Director, Paul Walden Home Services Limited, be thanked for his presentation to the Waiheke Community Board regarding the classification of boats and trailers on the causeway and the removal of those that are abandoned, derelict or do not belong to the Waiheke Boat Club.

    2. That Board Member Sears, as the SLIPs representative for the project, investigate the status of the current users of the land, meet with the appropriate officers and Paul Walden as a matter of urgency, identify derelict and abandoned boats, and report back to the Waiheke Community Board.

    Christopher Wragge, representing Waiheke Island Sustainable Development Group, spoke to the Board regarding the proposed meeting dates for the 2007-2010 term of the Waiheke Community Board.

    Pita Rikys, Waiheke Island Community Planning Group, spoke to the Board regarding the powers of the community board and the appointment of hearings commissioners.

    The Chairman left the room for this item due to his possible involvement as a planning commissioner on this matter. The Deputy Chairman assumed the chair.

    Chris Bristow, representing the Stony Batter Protection and Restoration Society, spoke to the Board regarding the possible purchase of a drain clearer to prevent flooding of the tunnels at Stony Batter. Correspondence relating to this item was considered under Item 20.3.

    2. That the Waiheke Community Board requests the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee extend the period of its financial commitment to the establishment of a community swimming pool facility, for at least another year to enable the community to fully explore all joint-funding options.
