MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE AUCKLAND CITY YOUTH COUNCIL HELD ON MONDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2005 AT 4:30PM

  4. Top PUBLIC FORUM

    4.1. SHORT FILM INITIATIVE – JORDAN DODSON

    Jordan Dodson, Oliver Page, Daisy Lawless and Patrick Dodson gave a presentation on a short film initiative they were proposing to raise awareness of young people in having to think things through before acting. The film would use the recent tragedy of the concrete slab being thrown off the motorway as a basis and would focus on the psyche of the offender. The Youth Council were advised that the film was seen as a tool to be used to initiate discussion with young people. Endorsement was being sought from the Youth Council for the project.

    That Jordan Dodson Oliver Page, Daisy Lawless and Patrick Dodson be thanked for their presentation and that the short film initiative be researched further and reported back to the next Auckland City Youth Council meeting.

    4.2 YOUNG PEOPLE IN PUBLIC SPACES – JIM GLEESON

    Mr Gleeson, Planner from Australia gave a brief presentation on the concept of public artworks having a dual purpose, eg: a skate park being a public artwork.

    That Jim Gleeson be thanked for his presentation regarding young people in public spaces.

  5. Top NEW MEMBERS/RESIGNATIONS

    There were no new members/resignations received for this meeting.

  6. Top CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

    The Chairman tabled a copy of the Auckland City Youth Council Achievements for the 2004/2005 Financial Year report which was considered by the Community Development and Equity Committee at its meeting held on Wednesday, 14 September 2005. A copy of the resolutions from that meeting were also tabled.

    The Chairman also reminded those members interested in attending a three-hour workshop regarding mental health and youth to let the community advisor know as soon as possible.

    Further members updates were received at the meeting:

    7.1 PAMELA MILLS

    • Moved house.
    • Attended the Political Youth Forum in Papatoetoe.
    • Have been elected Environmental Affairs Officer for the Auckland University Students Association.
    • Had a meeting with ARTA, am involved in a "car free day" at the University on Thursday.
    • Labour Party campaigning:
    • Attended candidate debates.
    • Canvassing
    • Travelled to Waikato University to listen to the Rt. Hon. Helen Clark speak.
    • Went to the TV1 leaders debate.
    • Gave blood
    • ACYC election project:
    • Have sent out text messages every weekend.
    • Distributed enrolment packs and posters.
    • Got in touch with the local registrar of Auckland City.

    7.2 JOHN OSBORNE

    • Attended a function regarding the Newmarket Railway Station and Signal Box.

    7.3 jayran mansouri

    • Actively involved in the school.

  8. Top COMMUNITY ADVISOR'S UPDATE

    The Community Advisor requested responses by midday Wednesday, 21 September 2005 from members regarding their presence for the next Treaty of Waitangi training date. The selection of Saturday dates are as follows: 15 October, 22 October, and 12 November 2005. Members were requested to state their preference for a date and preferred time.

    That the response to the Auckland City Youth Council's annual plan submission dated 9 August 2005 be received and that the Council be thanked for a comprehensive response.

    12.1 ANZAC DAY PROJECT REPORT 2005

    That the ANZAC Day Project Report 2005 dated 7 September 2005, by Aritra Ray be received.

    12.2 AUCKLAND CITY YOUTH COUNCIL SOCIAL EVENT

    That the verbal report from the Chairman regarding the social event proposed for Monday, 3 October 2005 at 7pm be received.

    12.3 CONVERSE '05 UPDATES

    Louise Phyn gave a verbal update on the Converse '05 follow up meeting held on 30 August 2005 as follows:

    • Didn't get as many delegates return as they would have liked. Had approximately 15-20 people plus the Youth Council members who attended.
    • Very pleased with the level of interest.
    • Next steps:
    • Want to keep the conversation going.
    • Another meeting proposed for either 27 or 29 September 2005.
    • From that meeting they will start organising a maximum of three projects.
    • Want to do a small project before the Christmas holidays.
    • Youth Council will be very involved in the projects.
    • Big thank you to all those Youth Council members who helped on the day.
