  7. Top COMMUNITY ADVISOR'S UPDATE

  8. Top MEMBERS' UPDATE

    Further members' updates were received at the meeting.

    8.1 Jayran Mansouri

    • Attended a United Nation conference of Amnesty International Group regarding petition against the arms trade.
    • inviting everyone to sign a petition.
    • a million signatures are required for lobbying for an international law change.
    • the web site: www.amnesty.org.nz

    8.2 Sophia Johnson

    • Attended a symphony orchestra composition training session on Thursday at Dominion Rd,
    • The training session was for youth to submit composition pieces and the winner will win $500.
    • The Waiheke High School Environment Team organised "Litter draws" - students' placed their names on a bottle and throw it into a bin, a bottle was picked out of the bin and a prize won. The idea was to encourage people to put rubbish into the bin.
    • In a band now working towards a show.
    • Finished all internal exams - doing well.

    8.3 Zachary Castles

    • Next year is the NZ youth parliament.
    • Auckland City Youth Council has a history with the youth Member of Parliament (MP).
    • If you would like to attend, please write to a local MP expressing your interest and desire to be involved.
    • Zachary is representing Dr Jackie Wood.
    • The age criteria is 16-18 years old, but not mandatory. As long as one is legally defined as youth and living in the electorate one would qualify.

    8.4 Louise Phyn

    • Library focus group on Thursday and brainstormed some ideas.
    • If anyone is interested in giving feedback please contact the librarian, Annie Coppell (annie.coppell@aucklandcity.govt.nz)  

    8.5 Sam Beanland

    • On 1 April, student loans are interest free and an interest free party was organised; free sausages were provided at the party.
    • I have applied for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and

    8.6 Dexter Henderson

    • Is involved in the student council which decided to have:
    • an orange day for city mission,
    • a daffodil day
    • a wild hair day where everyone sets up stalls and pay a $2 donation and do crazy things to each other's hair.
    • have started a Raffle for the Fiji trip
    • Water polo team has gone into division two.

    8.7 Sean Taylor

    • NZ Sign Language Bill is now an Act.
    • It is now an official language.

    The Executive Committee did not meet and have nothing to report.  

  10. Top PROJECTS:

    10.1 ANZAC DAY PROJECT 2006

    Seraphina Kim tabled a paper updating the Auckland City Youth Council on progress of the ANZAC Project.

    10.2 LONG-TERM COUNCIL COMMUNITY PLAN (LTCCP) 2006-2016 SUBMISSION

    Guanting Liu tabled the minutes of the 3 April 2006 LTCCP Project team meeting and a copy of the survey proposed for members to gain feedback from their networks.

    That the minutes of the Auckland City Youth Council Long-term council community plan project team and the survey form tabled by Guanting Liu at the 10 April 2006 Youth Council meeting be received.

    10.3 CONVERSE '06 SUMMIT PROJECT

    Sean Taylor gave a verbal update advising the following:

    • Attended a meeting over at Waitakere with two other representatives, one from Waitekere City Council and the other from North Shore City Council.
    • Key note themes:
    • Poverty versus social equity
    • Media perception of reality
    • People are more willing to hear the bad
    • Workshops ':
    • Graffiti
    • Alcohol and Drugs
    • Gangs
    • Workshop ideas
    • Tough is not enough
    • Youth in Business
    • Youth Communities
    • Youth Education - predictive factor towards crime

    10.4 CONVERSE: PHASE THREE

    Louise Phyn gave a verbal update advising the following:

    • Met last Thursday and have regular project team - Louise Phyn, Melanie Cripps, Dawn Talisa and Jeremy Lees-Green plus some others.  
    • Met new members of Community Action on Youth and Drugs (CAYAD) team, Sara and Michael.
    • Want to create a series of fun, safe, drug and alcohol free events.
    • Over next year organising two social events then one big pool party at the end of the year.
    • Planning first social event tentatively for 16 or 17 June in Balmoral, Pioneer Hall.
    • Have had a brainstorming session for ideas.

    10.5 AUCKLAND CITY YOUTH COUNCIL SOCIAL EVENT

    Zachary Castles gave a verbal update regarding the Auckland City Youth Council social event.

    • Thanking about a sleep over at Youthtown.
    • Take advantage of the opportunities offered at Youthtown.
    • Timing will be around term 3 year to be ' around middle of the term.
    • Members to email their ideas to Zachary Castles, Olivia Boddy, Andrew Harland-Smith and Samson Tonga.

    10.6 AUCKLAND CITY YOUTH COUNCIL WEB PAGES

    Jayran Mansouri gave a verbal update regarding the web pages and encouraged members to provide their updates:

    • Looking at updating the content of the website.
    • Doesn't reflect what the Auckland City Youth Council is about.
    • Members updates should be there
    • Links need to be clear.
    • It could have the chairperson's report in a prominent place.
    • Links that Auckland City Youth Council think that are relevant to youth.
    • Could check other youth council web pages.
    • The website is www.aucklandcity.govt/ACYC
