Avondale/Roskill Ward by-election
An extra-ordinary vacancy has occurred in the
Avondale-Roskill Ward of the Auckland City Council following the death of Councillor Linda Leighton in late 2007. Accordingly, a by-election
is required to be held to fill the vacancy.
The by-election will be conducted under the provisions of the Local Electoral
Act 2001 and the Local Electoral Regulations 2001.
Date of by-election
The by-election was held by postal vote on Wednesday 9 April 2008.
Voting documents were sent to all eligible electors, by
post, from Tuesday 18 March 2008.
The three week voting period was from Tuesday 18 March
2008 to noon Wednesday 9 April 2008.
Electors were able to post their
completed voting document back to the electoral officer using a pre-paid
envelope sent with the voting document.
A polling place for the issuing of
special voting documents and for the receiving of completed voting documents
was available over the voting period from the electoral office.
In addition,
completed voting documents could be received at the
Avondale,
Blockhouse Bay and
Mt Roskill community libraries from 9am to noon on election day (Wednesday 9
April 2008).

John Lister is therefore the elected new
councillor for the Avondale-Roskill Ward.
Voter turnout was 26.1 per cent, which compares to 38.3 per cent for this ward at last
year's triennial election.
Voting
Voting documents were sent to all eligible electors, by
post, from Tuesday 18 March 2008.
To be counted, all completed voting documents had to be in
the hands of the electoral officer or an electoral official, by noon,
Wednesday 9 April 2008.
Preliminary results were known as soon as they are
available on the afternoon, Wednesday 9 April 2008 and will be
accessible on this website.
Those eligible to vote at the Avondale-Roskill Ward
by-election are all resident electors and non-resident ratepayer electors whose
names appear on the Preliminary Electoral Roll for the Avondale-Roskill Ward.
