General
Elections are as follows:
Temporary election hoardings and signs, whether on Auckland City Council-owned designated sites or private property, do not require a
building consent or fee payable prior to their erection.
The period of display for election hoardings and signs, whether on Auckland
City Council-owned designated sites or private property, is limited to two calendar months prior to the general

Any election hoarding and sign erected on a council-owned designated site
must comply with the following conditions:
- only one election sign is erected per candidate or per party on a road
frontage of any one site;
- elections signs must be less than 3 metres above ground level and must have a
sign area of less than 3 square metres (approximately 2.4 x 1.2 metres);
- there must be at least 1.4 metres clearance left between the base of the
election sign and the ground;
- election signs must be securely braced with supports at 45 degrees to the
sign anchored at ground level;
- election signs must be free standing. They must not be fixed to any tree,
building or furniture;
- signs must be placed outside the dripline of any tree;
- no secondary signs, posters, flags etc. may be attached to election signs;
- election signs must comply with the site specific instructions listed in the
tables below.
Please note that:
- Election signs erected on any other site must comply with the requirements of
the council signs bylaw (part 27) and
billboards bylaw (part 27B).
For most sites these rules place restrictions on sign size and placement and
may also require a building consent.
- Please do not drive or park vehicles on the election hoarding sites. Please
help us maintain these areas for the public.
Removal of signs and hoardings
Council will remove election signs that do not meet the above requirements,
signs that are deemed unsafe, and signs that do not comply with council bylaws.
Election candidates will be charged the full costs of removal, storage and
administration.
Election candidates should ensure that their election signs are monitored
daily and reinstated or repaired. Council may remove damaged, vandalised or
unsightly signs.
Election candidates need to register with us so we can notify someone before
we remove election signs.
To register, please phone the Information advisor, Democracy services on (09) 307 7344 or email
officialinformation@aucklandcity.govt.nz and provide the name and contact details of the
person responsible for establishing and maintaining election signs.
