Council policy on election hoardings

The Auckland City Council's guidelines on the erection of election hoardings/signs for the 2007 Local Body Elections are as follows:

Guidelines

Temporary election hoardings and signs, whether on Auckland City owned designated sites or private property, do not require a building consent or fee payable prior to their erection.

The period of display for election hoardings and signs on Auckland City owned designated sites is limited to two calendar months prior to the general election. For private property, there is no time restriction before the election.

All election hoardings and signs placed on Auckland City owned designated sites are to be removed before the election day.

Any election hoarding and sign erected on an Auckland City owned designated site must comply with the following conditions:

  • have a ground clearance of 1.4m under the sign
  • not exceed 3m in height (from ground level)
  • not exceed 3m2 in area (2.4m x 1.2m sheet)
  • be securely braced from the ground up to carry wind loads for 60 days
  • be placed in strict compliance within the designated areas of the approved Auckland City owned sites
  • not be affixed to any tree, fence, parks furniture or Auckland City sign
  • not be placed under the drip line of trees (tree protection rules, district plan)
  • the grassed area damaged by the hoardings/signs, ie support holes, must be reinstated

No vehicles are permitted to park on any grassed areas or footpaths for the purpose of putting up or removal of election hoardings and signs on an Auckland City owned designated site.

Any non-complying signs, or signs deemed to be unsafe, may be removed by Auckland City officers and enforcement costs may apply.

Monitoring

  • candidates and representatives from political parties should regularly (daily if possible), monitor all their election signs and reinstate any vandalised or storm damaged signs.
  • any signs that have not been reinstated within a period of 72 hours may be removed from the site by Auckland City officers.
  • to assist Auckland City in the prompt processing of an election sign complaint, it would be appreciated if all candidates and parties register a contact name and phone number with Auckland City Council's electoral officer.

These guidelines are to be read in conjunction with the Auckland City Consolidated Bylaws contained in part 27 - signs, on election hoardings
