Background
The redeveloped Aotea Square (2008-10) is the city centre's
premier open space with a distinct and unique identity. It provides a safe,
family-friendly environment for residents and visitors to enjoy major public
events and everyday activities.
Brief history
1976: The Civic underground carpark was built
1979: Aotea Square opens
1990: The Aotea Centre opens
October 2008: The $84 million redevelopment of the Square started. Works included Square upgrade, Civic Car Park upgrade and roof replacement as well as improvements to the façade of Aotea Centre.
October 2010: The majority of the redevelopment works are completed.
June 2011: The redevelopment project gains merit at
the Property Council Awards in acknowledgement of the community benefit,
efficient use of capital, return on investment and environmentally sustainable
features
July 2011: The project takes out the Public Sector
Project of the Year Award from the Project Management Institute of New Zealand.
According to judges the project displayed "excellent management of technical,
physical and political components to deliver a successful project for the wider
Auckland community."
