Art works in Aotea Square
Temporary artworks
Two temporary large scale art works are being
painted on the hoardings around Aotea Square.
Joy Chang and Lucy Tien, recent graduates from The
University of Auckland Elam School of Fine Arts, were selected from a group of
graduates who submitted proposals for the hoardings.
Their designs were chosen because they are visually
engaging while also showing great artistic strength and skilful engagement with
the square and the audience. The works reflect the positive changes the CBD is
undergoing, and contribute to a vivid and dynamic city centre.
Resene Paints are generously supplying the paint
for the art works.
During the
construction period, four art works were moved from Aotea Square into safe
storage, They are Mountain Fountain by Terry Stringer, Sir Dove-Myer Robinson by
Tobias Twiss, Te Waharoa o Aotea by Selwyn Muru and Te Wero by Lyndon Smith
(1927-2003).
In June
2009, the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee considered the locations of
these artworks in the new square:
- Mountain Fountain will be relocated to another location outside Aotea
Square, with public consultation on alternative sites.
- The Sir Dove-Myer Robinson statue will be returned to its original
location.
- Te Waharoa o Aotea will be sited close to its original position near
the Queen Street entrance to Aotea Square.
- The Te Wero statue will be moved to an indoor venue as agreed with the
family of the artist.
The
following art works are protected on site:
- Untitled by Paratene Matchitt
- Red Dancer by Barry Lett
- Lord Auckland by Henry Weekes (1807-1877)
The Arts,
Culture and Recreation Committee also approved the recommendation that:
- Red Dancer be moved to a more prominent location behind the Kingsland
Station in time for Rugby World Cup 2011.
- With the artist's permission, Untitled by Paratene Matchitt, will be
incorporated into the Aotea Centre new café and box office.
Further
investigation has highlighted that The Kingsland location is unsuitable for Red
Dancer. It will therefore remain in its location on the Aotea Centre.
