Breathing new life into your Aotea Square
Aotea Square welcomes a Pohutukawa
The first tree, a native Pohutukawa was planted by Mayor John Banks this week, while representatives of Ngati Whatua were in attendance for a traditional blessing for good health and long life of the tree and the square.
Construction in Aotea Square is now taking place around the clock in preparation for the opening in October. Soon landscaping will commence including installation of more trees, paving, seating and lighting.
Aotea Square is on schedule to be completed and handed back to the public to enjoy by early October.
We've passed the halfway mark!
In October 2008, construction started on the redevelopment of the square. This
project involves:
- Repairing and strengthening the Civic car park roof
- An upgrade of Aotea Square
- Alterations to the front of the Aotea Centre
The project is
expected to be completed in October 2010.

A new look and feel
Essential repairs to the Civic car park, underneath the square has provided an
ideal opportunity for the council to revitalise Aotea Square.
Flanked by Aotea Centre, the historic Auckland Town Hall and other civic and
commercial buildings, the square is the place where Aucklanders gather to
celebrate and commemorate. It is also a favourite spot for city workers,
residents, shoppers, students and tourists to relax, unwind, and enjoy the
ambience.
The
redevelopment will restore the square to its former status as the city's leading
public open space and events venue that caters to young and old, and to all
interests, activities and tastes.
It will be able to host major big screen events, music concerts and cultural
festivals that can draw crowds of up to 20 000. There is also room for everyday
activities such as busking, family picnics and various forms of recreation.
The
redevelopment is part of the council's plan to create a lively arts, culture and
entertainment hub with a distinctly Auckland feel. The area, referred to as the
Aotea Quarter, is a cluster of popular attractions which includes Aotea Square,
Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland Town Hall, Auckland Central Library, Aotea Centre
and The Civic Theatre.
