The Quay Park site
Overseas experience shows that arenas work best when they
are centrally located, within easy reach of public transport, parking buildings,
accommodation and central city entertainment.
The site of Vector Arena is on the edge of the city's
central business district, alongside the heritage railway station building at
Quay Park. It is accessible from Beach Road and Quay Street, major gateways to
the CBD from the south and east. It is within easy walking distance of the
city's new transport interchange at Britomart and the downtown ferry terminal.
Auckland City Council secured a 150-year lease of the 5ha
site in 1997, from the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board.
In June 1998, the Hillary Commission endorsed Quay Park
site as the best of three proposed sites for an indoor arena. The others
evaluated were one proposed for a stadium by Manukau City Council and the
Auckland Regional Council's Ericsson Stadium in Penrose. This selection process
was facilitated by the Auckland Regional Council, with the Hillary Commission
acting as an independent adviser, to avoid the duplication of facilities in the
region.
The Hillary Commission said:
"This site is an opportunity which will not be repeated. It
provides a location with the dual advantages of excellent access for all
transport modes and a place along Auckland's waterfront"
