Broadway's $6 million face lift is now complete with the Mayor of Auckland city, Hon. John Banks announcing the official completion and unveiling a commemorative plaque on 31 October 2008. The upgrade, which gives Newmarket's main street a polished look and feel features improvements such as:

  • upgraded footpaths with the added safety feature of slip resistant paving
  • high quality, functional and stylish street accessories such as seating, bins and low stone walls
  • improved landscaping featuring native and exotic trees
  • new street lighting
  • reduced street clutter to make the shopping environment even better.

The project, which began in August 2007, taking roughly 14 months to complete.

The project is hoped to provide a boost to local businesses as well as a more pleasant destination for Newmarket shoppers and tourists.

Final design

The project team worked alongside the community and businesses to create a final design for Newmarket that suits the area's special character while delivering better pedestrian access and improved safety.

During public consultation, which was carried out in December 2006, respondents opted for footpaths of Timaru bluestone, chosen for its volcanic character and because it is a New Zealand material.

At the 26 July council meeting, the council approved the tender by construction company P and M Paving Ltd to deliver the project.
