Auckland's CBD Into the Future Action Plan

Auckland's CBD Into the Future project is about transforming and revitalising the central business district of Auckland into one of the world's most vibrant and dynamic business and cultural centres. Auckland's CBD is changing. More people are choosing to live in the city centre, its waterfront is being transformed into one of the most exciting in the world, a new transport interchange has brought trains back into the centre of the city; the 12,000 seat Vector Arena has been completed, and there's more to do and see.

To continue to thrive, Auckland's CBD must attract the entrepreneurial people and businesses that a successful 21st-century city needs. These innovative people can choose to live anywhere in the world. To attract and keep them, Auckland's CBD must offer the sophisticated lifestyles and the high quality amenities and services that they demand. A successful CBD means a successful Auckland and New Zealand.

Guiding the CBD's revitalisation is Auckland's CBD Into the Future strategy and action plan, which were adopted in 2004 after extensive research and consultation. The outcomes of the 2004-2007 action plan was reviewed and the 2008-2011 action plan developed.

Work is well underway on projects around the city, with some already completed, including upgrades to Karangahape Road, Quay Street, Vulcan Lane, Lorne Street, Khartoum Place,Beach Road (stage 1) and Queen Street.

Other major overhauls in progress, or in the planning stages include:

  • Britomart precinct redevelopment
  • Auckland Art Gallery redevelopment
  • Aotea Square Redevelopment
  • Aotea quarter
  • Marine event precinct
  • Te Wero Bridge.

A CBD targeted rate was introduced in 2004 and is expected to generate an additional $167 million for projects in the CBD over the next 12 years. It will enable rapid progress to transform the look and feel of the CBD.
