Auckland's CBD Into the future
Beach Road upgrade
Project snapshot
Beach Road
is a key pedestrian link between important CBD destinations such as the Vector
Arena and the Britomart Transport Centre. It is also home to an increasing
number of residents and businesses.
In 2007,
Auckland City Council upgraded the lighting on Beach Road to improve pedestrian
safety and traffic safety in light of the additional number of people visting
and living in the area.
The first part of the two-stage project involved the
installation of 54 multi-functional poles with reduced glare lights. Pedestrian
lighting was also installed in the Wynyard and Earnest Davies walkways and
outside the Scene Apartments.
Pedestrian
benefits included:
- increased
visibility at bus stops and intersections
- reduction
of blind spots.
The
project is part of the $157 million, 10-year streetscape and open space upgrade
programme designed to create more pedestrian-friendly public spaces in
Auckland's CBD.
A
draft concept
design was prepared by the council and architects, Boffa Miskell, for the second stage
and was the subject of
public consultation.
At this
time, the council is not proceeding with stage two. The situation may change
should funding become available in the future.

New multi functional poles with reduced glare lights have been installed. These are also being used in the
