What's ahead?

Auckland City Council is planning the second stage of the Beach Road upgrade that will:

  • create a more attractive, durable and easily maintained street environment that will provide for current and future users
  • improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists into and around the CBD Arena area, whilst recognising the street's important transport function
  • celebrate the street's transport, cultural and environment heritage

Stage two will see new paving, street furniture, signage, vegetation and other exciting landscape and urban design elements installed in the street.

The lighting on Beach Road was upgraded in the first stage of this project, which was completed in March 2007. Fifty-four multi-functional poles, with reduced glare lights, were installed along the street to improve pedestrian safety through:

  • increased visibility at bus stops and intersections
  • prevention of blind spots.

Pedestrian lighting was also installed:

  • in the Wynyard and Earnest Davies walkways
  • outside Scene Apartments

Auckland City Council and Boffa Miskell has developed the draft concept design, which was consulted on between 2 April and 23 April 2008. We are currently considering the feedback received during consultation. We will compile your feedback and report the results to the council's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee. This committee will consider your feedback, alongside advice from council officers and specialist advisers, and approve a final concept design.

Why the changes?

Beach Road is a key pedestrian link between important CBD destinations such as the Vector Arena and the Britomart Transport Centre.

The purpose of the project is to improve the street environment, with a focus on improving pedestrian and traffic safety in light of the additional number of people visiting and living in the area.

The project is part of the $157 million, 10-year streetscape and open space upgrade programme that is creating better, high quality public spaces in Auckland's CBD.
