Project snapshot
The $2.29 million upgrade of
this important pedestrian space has begun, with the upgrade of lower Khartoum
Place completed in mid 2007. Upper Khartoum Place is expected to be upgraded in
2009/2010, to coincide with the redevelopment of the nearby
Auckland Art
Gallery. The emphasis is on re-energising Khartoum Place, which runs between
Lorne and Kitchener streets, as an attractive and safe inner-city spot for
people to gather and relax in. It will also provide an area for quiet
recreation, people watching, meeting friends and the potential for special
events and performances.
Key elements of the new design are:
- preserving the Women's Centenary (1893-1993) suffragette
tile artwork
- new paving and handrails to improve the safety of the
stairs
- improved lighting, seating, paving and furniture
- a new set of straight stairs alongside the existing
switch-back stairs (this will happen during upper Khartoum Place's upgrade)
- enhancing the 'walk of art' feel and compatibility with
its surroundings.
