Consultation
- Throughout the process there has been overwhelming support for the
upgrade of Queen Street.
- There will always be parts of the design that appeal to some groups over
others.
- The Queen Street design process has involved a lot of work with different
individuals and groups of people to establish areas of priority and concern.
- The consultation that has taken place throughout the design process
included:
- Public consultation
- Consultation through particular forums including:
The Urban Design PanelCBD project reference group
Heart of the City
Property Council
Targeted rates advisory group
- A value management workshop
- Workshops with stakeholders on key issues e.g. transport
- Individual discussions with particular property owners
- Discussions with other key stakeholders such as ARTA, Auckland City's Traffic
Management Unit and NZ Historic Places Trust.
- Workshops for Auckland City councillors
- Work on the Queen Street design began in 2003 and in April 2004 preliminary
concept designs went out to the public for comment.
- Feedback from that process led to some major changes to the design. This was
particularly in the area of vehicle access and parking which Queen Street
businesses felt were vital for the economic vitality of the street.
- A number of improvements were also made to the design to enhance pedestrian
safety and convenience.
- The revised draft concept design, released in March 2005, also catered for the
possibility of future options for public transport.
- Overall the revised draft concept was well received. There was overwhelming
support for upgrading Queen Street and various proposals and comments were
received on further improvements.
- Progress of the design since the concept was adopted by the council in April
2005 has focussed on the details of some issues including:
- Pedestrian access
- Paving layout and feature pavers
- Progressing the planting plan
- Collaborative artworks
- Street furniture
