CBD retail strategy
- Streetscape upgrades are only one part of the CBD project - another
important part of the project is the CBD Retail Strategy study.
- The study will analyse the retail sector in Auckland's CBD as it is now
and make recommendations for how we can develop a stronger, internationally
competitive retail sector in the future.
- Any future plans would include building on the existing retail base and
adding complementary new developments.
- The study is planned to take place over a six month period with the
following components:-
- A retail inventory that identifies existing retail uses in the study
area and adjacent areas, as well as potential retail space, to be used
as a basis for implementation strategies
- A retail analysis that identifies the trade area and target markets
to identify the amount and types of retail that can be supported by the
target markets. It will provide an assessment of competing shopping
areas and identify current and potential new markets.
- A market strategy identifying market sectors to target for
development, merchandising mix suitable for the trade area demographics,
spatial location and distinctive precinct-based themes and strategies
for retail space management and coordinated tenanting.
- A 'barriers to success' analysis that will define both private and
public sector issues and barriers that could prevent or hinder the
successful implementation of the plan and identify concrete policy
recommendations to address these issues and barriers.
- Once the study is complete, the council will finalise the CBD retail
strategy and work with stakeholders to develop an action plan.
- This work should be completed and ready for implementation by the time
the Queen Street upgrade is finished in 2007.
