Reducing the speed limit
Reducing the speed limit
A major upgrade to transform Queen Street into a world-class environment is
complete. In the busy retail area between Mayoral Drive and Customs
Street, pedestrians represent a significant majority of the total traffic
demand, so in planning for the upgrade Auckland City Council rated pedestrians
the highest priority users, followed by passenger transport then private
vehicles.
The key improvements to Queen Street include three new pedestrian crossings,
increased footpath widths and improved signal phasing to enhance pedestrian
safety and amenity.
From Monday 6th October 2008 the speed limit on Queen Street, between
Customs Street and Mayoral Drive, will be reduced to 30 km to improve public
safety.
