Project objectives
We asked landscape architects Boffa Miskell to develop a
draft design that will:
- celebrate the square's heritage, religious and cultural significance and its
relationship to the cathedral
- create
a safe, comfortable and enjoyable day and night-time environment for pedestrians
- retain
and enhance the square as the city's urban oasis, where people can relax and
enjoy their surroundings
- encourage interaction between people that is appropriate during the day and at
night
- make it
easier for people to walk into and through the square
- use
high-quality materials that can be easily maintained.
Along with the design objectives, we also considered:
- accessibility - providing for a clear, unobstructed and direct route for
pedestrians and the needs of people with limited mobility
- safety - improving actual and perceived safety using a range of Crime
Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) techniques
- character - reflecting the local environment
- flexibility of activity - responsive to business, resident, religious
and visitor activity
- future use - developments around the square's edge and its role within
future CBD activity
We also considered feedback
from the council's internal experts, such as our arborist and urban designers,
as well as that received from stakeholders at the start of the project.
