History
The upgrade of St Patrick's Square has created a special destination in the CBD.
New water features, artworks, high quality paving, seating areas, grass, trees and vegetation have transformed the square into a
distictive urban space in the heart of the CBD – a real urban oasis.
Located between Albert, Hobson, Swanson and Wyndham streets and home to St Patrick's Cathedral, the square is the only significant area of green open space between midtown and the waterfront and is now the perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the central city.
The upgraded square:
- celebrates the square's
heritage,
religious and cultural significance and its relationship to the cathedral
- creates a safe, comfortable and enjoyable day and night-time environment for
pedestrians
- enhances the square as the city's urban oasis, where people can relax
and enjoy their surroundings
- encourages interaction between people makes it easier for people to walk
into and through the square
- uses high-quality materials that can be easily maintained.
The $9.2m upgrade, funded by the CBD targeted rate, is part of the council's
10-year programme to transform key
streets and open spaces to create a world-class, vibrant and dynamic business
and cultural centre.
