Project snapshot

Auckland City Council is planning a $7.8 million (estimated) upgrade of St Patrick's Square.

Why?

  • To re-establish the significant space as a highly valued urban oasis, a place of respite from the hustle and bustle of the central city.
  • To make the square a destination, a place for people to safely meet and socialise, and to reflect and contemplate.
  • To celebrate its historical significance and connection to St Patrick's Cathedral, completed in September 2007.
  • It is part of the 10-year programme to transform key streets and open spaces in the CBD to create an even better city.

Where?

Located between Albert, Hobson, Swanson and Wyndham streets, it is home to St Patrick's Cathedral and is the only significant area of green open space from mid-town to the waterfront.

What?

When complete, the square will be a destination with interesting artworks, distinctive water features and a fantastic night time ambience.

It will be a place where people can safely meet and socialise with their friends, reflect and contemplate, and escape from the noise and pressures of daily life. Businesses, such as cafes, may want to be located near the square and contribute to its vitality.

How?

The concept design was approved in September 2007, taking into consideration the feedback received during consultation on the draft design.
