Swanson Street upgrade
Project snapshot
The Swanson Street upgrade was completed in February 2009. The project was
carried out in two stages.
Stage one covered lower Swanson Street from Queen Street to Mills Lane and
featured the introduction of new paving, lighting, landscaping and street
furniture. This stage was completed in February 2008.
The second stage covered upper Swanson Street from Mills Lane to Albert
Street. Work included widening footpaths, installing high quality paving,
improved lighting and additional loading zones in Mills Lane. A raised speed
table at the Mills Lane and Swanson Street junction designed to slow vehicles
and provide an elevated, safer pedestrian crossing was also introduced.
This $2.5 million upgrade has resulted in improved pedestrian flow and a more
attractive and user friendly environment.
The Swanson Street upgrade was part of the Auckland City Council's 10-year
streetscapes and open space upgrade programme. The programme focuses on creating
high quality public environments that people want to be in, as well as providing
ease and safety of movement, particularly for pedestrians.
