What Auckland City will do to achieve the vision

The actions below will help to achieve the vision for the Victoria Quarter. The dates are indicative and specify the period within which the actions begin.

Economic
  • Undertake consultation to find out what is needed to retain and attract creative industry businesses
  • 2006-2009
Social and cultural
  • Work with residents of a Victoria Quarter apartment building to further explore what is needed to create better urban neighbourhoods and a sense of belonging.

  • Establish and promote awareness of family needs in higher-density living environments, reassess appropriate apartment sizes; and include crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) guidelines in statutory documents, promoting them to the wider community.

  • Work with social agencies, including the Auckland City Mission and Youthtown, on development projects that enhance the sense of community in the city

Built environment
  • Chance the Auckland City District Plan (Central Area) to promote the built form and types of activities desired in the quarter.

  • Prepare a heritage trail for the Victoria Quarter

  • Establish a specialist team to work with developers to secure the best environment and design for sites.

  • Upgrade Victoria, Wellesley, Hobson and Nelson streets.

Open space
  • Improve streetscape quality and walkability on main pedestrian routes to create people-friendly places.

  • Put together an open space plan and network by securing additional public open space, securing pedestrian and open space links through development sites, and undertaking a study to decide if the council should develop public land east of Victoria Park Market car park as open space.

  • Start a pedestrian study to determine the viability of cross-arterial links.

  • Develop a public artwork plan for the quarter, including identifying sites and artwork.

  • Assess the effect of developing the Victoria Quarter on the Victoria Park management plan.

Transport
  • Develop a transport plan for the Victoria Quarter that shows how to meet traffic, passenger transport, pedestrian and car parking needs. This will include reviewing the street environment of Nelson and Hobson streets.

  • Work with Transit New Zealand to complete the harbour bridge to city motorway widening, and confirm the strategy for additional harbour crossings.

  • Review residential and commercial parking demands in the quarter and effects on the wider CBD.

  • Review the existing and required infrastructure for the Victoria Quarter
