Vision and principles

Vision

The Victoria Quarter will be the CBD's dynamic western fringe, providing a diverse choice of alternative, intensive inner city urban living and working opportunities.

Principles

These principles, together with the principles in Auckland's CBD Into the future strategy, will guide the revitalisation of the Victoria Quarter.

Encouraging new businesses

New businesses will suit the Victoria Quarter's fringe location and will build on the existing entrepreneurial and creative industries.
Medium-scale and flexible building forms will meet the needs of start-up and specialist industries wanting an affordable central city address.

Creating urban neighbourhoods

A network of unique urban residential neighbourhoods will make the Victoria Quarter an attractive place to live. The diverse range of housing types and styles will take their lead from the “intimate” housing near the Victoria Park Market and cater for families seeking an inner city lifestyle. Higher intensity housing is expected on the Nelson Street ridge.

Meeting community needs

A high standard of residential and community amenity will help the quarter provide the kind of community future residents and workers want for the future.

Facing west

Development will reinforce and take advantage of the views, sunlight and access provided by the quarter's west-facing basin topography.

Linking open spaces

A range of new parks, squares and plazas will provide a network of open space stretching from Victoria Park to the core of the CBD. This will require improvements to the amenity and streetscapes of Hobson, Nelson and Fanshawe streets, and the motorway.

Connecting to the CBD

Additional links over the arterial roads, the motorway and through existing large blocks will reconnect the Victoria Quarter and its future residents and workers with the rest of the CBD and its neighbouring inner city suburbs. Improved passenger transport and pedestrian facilities will provide easy access to the CBD.

Celebrating the past

Significant heritage features in the Victoria Quarter will be recognised and celebrated. They include the former shoreline, Maori heritage sites, important European buildings and sites such as the Victoria Park Market, Freeman's Hotel, Berlei factory and Empire Tavern.

Providing a quality street environment

Improving the street environment for all modes of transport - pedestrians, passenger transport, private vehicles and vehicles moving goods and services will help develop a more effective transport network.

Improving walkability

The appearance and walkability of the main routes through the Victoria Quarter to the CBD - Nelson, Hobson, Victoria and Wellesley streets - will be improved. While the routes remain important for public and private transport, they will also become people places.

Complementing, not competing

In terms of commercial and residential development, the Victoria Quarter will be developed to complement the rest of the CBD rather than compete with it.

Victoria Park

Victoria Park will be further developed for recreation

Quality design

The council will advocate high-quality design for private development and lead by example in the public sector.
