Introduction
Where is the Victoria Quarter?
It's the historic warehouse and industrial area of
Auckland's CBD, bounded by Hobson, Fanshawe and Union Streets, the motorway, and includes
Victoria Park. Once the industrial hub of early Auckland, the quarter is now an
eclectic mix of historic buildings and commercial activities; intimate in parts
and bleak and barren in others. See the Victoria

The need for a plan
Our research showed overwhelming support among businesses
and residents in the area for change. You told us there is no strong community
focus or even a sense of community. Much of the quarter's buildings are poorly
designed and don't take advantage of the west-facing aspect. Because traffic
dominates its streets and the northern motorway is a barrier to its connections
with the inner city
suburbs. It's also considered an unattractive and bleak place for pedestrians,
with little street-level activity or ambience. We aim to make the quarter into
the CBD's dynamic western fringe, providing a diverse choice of alternative,
intensive inner city urban living and working opportunities.
What's ahead
Creating a sense of community is one of the main goals for
this important link to the CBD. More residential properties will be encouraged,
complimented by a network of parks, squares and plazas, stretching from Victoria
Park, over the ridge to join other public open spaces in the CBD. Auckland City
Council believes every community needs a heart; a place where people meet and
where community facilities such as libraries are provided. Victoria Park Market
and the former council depot are considered two ideal spots for community
facilities.
Over the next three years other goals include:
- improving the street environment for all modes of
transport
- improved footpaths and shelter
- purchase of public open space and its development
- working with social agencies to enhance the sense of
community
- working with developers to find the best location and
design for residential and commercial sites.
The Victoria Quarter plan is part of
Auckland's CBD Into the future strategy, a 10-year plan to enhance the
urban, cultural and business environment of Auckland's CBD. There is also a plan
for the
Aotea Quarter.
