Background

Churchill Park is located at 320-336 Riddell Road, Glendowie and is 44 hectares in size. It is currently grazed with cattle and has a farmland rural character. Auckland City Council acquired this land in approximately 1945 as a public park. Its purpose and future was formally considered when a management plan for the park was completed in December 1996 with public input.

This management plan states that:

"The principal purpose of the park is to provide informal recreation opportunities that will attract local users and the wider Auckland community. A secondary purpose is to enhance the natural processes in the park."

The identified objectives from the management plan that are relevant in terms of the future development of Churchill Park are:

  • the design and progressive development of Churchill Park as a premier park
  • a 'countryside in the city' landscape character with more trees and areas of re-established indigenous plant communities and wildlife habitat
  • increased opportunities to enjoy Churchill Park in a variety of ways consistent with the character of the park

The management plan envisaged a development or concept plan to outline the design intent and layout for the park to achieve the above. The resulting long-term landscape plan sets includes the following items:

  • a design which is consistent with the management plan and the 'countryside in the city' character
  • a design which responds strongly to the natural qualities and opportunities of the site
  • a design that provides a variety of opportunities for informal recreation.

The management plan also set out the following elements, which have been provided for in the long-term landscape concept plan:

  • establishing different vegetation types in a way that enhances the natural and landscape values of the park, including maintenance of an open pastoral area, plantings to attract native birds, progressive replacement of the pines with native forest or woodland, planting specimen shade trees, and wetland plantings in the stream environment
  • retaining cattle grazing on the upper slopes
  • building a network of paths that provide a range of landscape experiences and are usable in all weather
  • providing for appropriately designed park furniture, signage and other interpretation opportunities such as art works
  • considering the future use of the old golf clubhouse site and building, ensuring public access to the site
  • providing a main entrance to the park south of 338 Riddell Road including parking, and gates. This work is scheduled to begin in summer 2008.
