Following endorsement of the long-term plan by the Community Board and the Arts Community and Recreation Committee the developed design phase will proceed. This involves working with the Community Board to outline priorities and stage physical works accordingly.

The main features of the plan include the following works:

External fencing

  • All external fencing of grazed area to be upgraded to a post and 7-wire type and maintained to a high standard.
  • An improved pedestrian gate system will ensure access to the park for all abilities.

Specimen tree planting

  • Appropriate native and exotic specimen tree planting to provide shade and encourage bird life.
  • Fencing around new trees to avoid cattle damage in the grazing areas.
  • Any new fencing would be in keeping with the park.

Pedestrian access and amenities

  • Any tracks not required will be removed.
  • All existing gravel tracks to be retained and upgraded to 2 meter wide gravel footpaths suitable for a wide range of users including people with pushchairs and wheel chairs.
  • Gate systems will be used as opposed to styles to ensure access for all abilities.
  • Any new footpaths will follow existing desire lines.
  • All pedestrian entrances to the park will be enhanced through weed removal, shrub planting, signage and timber boardwalks over the Glendowie stream.
  • All areas outside of the grazing areas to be developed in consultation with the community board.

Old Golf Clubhouse and surrounds

  • Auckland City Council to look at the lease arrangements for the old clubhouse and investigate options to enhance the area and facilitate public access to enjoy the panoramic views.

Native re-vegetation areas

  • All existing unsafe old pines to be removed and areas planted with appropriate native trees and shrubs.
  • All re-vegetation areas will be fenced off from cattle to allow restoration of the streams and tributaries and to encourage bird life.
  • New footpaths and bridges will provide access through these areas.

Glendowie stream gully

  • Current flooding problem resolved with a storm water upgrade carried out by Auckland City Council and Metrowater.
  • A nikau and fern grove or similar to be established in a joint venture between Auckland City Council, neighbouring residents and a garden society or group.
  • All plantings will encourage birdlife.
