Fukuoka-Auckland Youth Exchange 2004
Description
The sister city relationship between Auckland City Council and
Fukuoka City in Japan was formally established in 1986, with the first youth exchange visit from Auckland to Fukuoka taking place in 1987. Since then
there have been exchanges between the two cities on an annual basis. The exchange programme provides an excellent opportunity for Auckland city youth to
experience Japanese lifestyle first hand through private home-stays with Japanese families.
In August 2004, a group of 15 students and three chaperones from Fukuoka arrived for a 10-day exchange programme. They had the opportunity to visit
with the Honourable John Banks, tour the University of Auckland, visit the Auckland War Memorial for a Maori Cultural Show, have a hands on farm experience,
participate in a flax weaving class, as well as attend various Auckland City schools with their individual New Zealand host student.

Japan had requested the opportunity for their students to participate in a volunteer exercise. Through collaboration with Auckland City Council's
living parks coordinator and the community youth advisor a volunteer tree planting day was arranged at Hamlins Hill in Mt Wellington. A total of 84 manuka
seedlings were planted.
