Eden Park area upgrades
Upgrades |
Who else is involved?
Auckland City Council and
other agencies are undertaking a range of upgrade projects in the streets
surrounding Eden Park.

These projects will improve
pedestrian access, public transport and safety as well as improving traffic flow
in the area around Eden Park. They will also improve public transport options,
reliability and efficiency to, from and around the area. Significant long-term
benefits to the urban environment, neighbourhood security and important services
such as power and water will be generated.

Sandringham Road
Auckland City Council is
upgrading Sandringham Road to improve public transport choices, traffic flow and
pedestrian and vehicle safety.
Works will
include:
- widening Sandringham Road between Onslow Road and Burnley Terrace and creating new
footpaths
- undergrounding the existing overhead electric cables
- creating a
new public space at the intersection of Walters Road
- relocating
three houses within their existing boundaries (30 to 34 Sandringham Road)
- shifting
the road south eastwards to allow for improvements to Kingsland Station
- creating a
new pedestrian crossing near the intersection of Walters and Sandringham Roads
- creating a
new Southbound bus lane
- improved
lighting.
What you can
expect
Preparation
and enabling works will take place between early December 2009 and February 2010
– this includes the shifting of the houses at 30 to 34 Sandringham Road to their
new sites within the properties, trenching work in Sandringham Road for utility
services, and the demolition of the house at 38 Sandringham Road.
Most of the
other works will take place between February and September 2010. There will be
some effect on traffic but the Council will work to minimise disruption and
ensure residents will have access to driveways at all times.
Access to
Eden Park
Auckland City Council is
creating a new lane between Walters Road and Sandringham Road to improve
pedestrian access between the city and Eden Park. The lane is planned to be a
shared space (low speed environment where all road users have equal priority to
the road – a system which has been successful internationally), and will provide
an alternative route for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers (one way only),
travelling around the area. For events at Eden Park, the lane is planned to be
pedestrian only.
Works will include:
Creating a new one-way road
from Sandringham Road to Walters Road. The lane will be a shared space.
What you can expect
Road works on the link lane
will take place between December 2009 and March 2010. Auckland City Council will
be keeping residents in the immediate vicinity fully informed about how they may
be affected as works take place and is committed to ensuring this new lane is
safe upon completion for all road users.
Footpaths and roads
In the streets surrounding
the stadium, Auckland City Council is improving footpaths and roads to provide a
safer journey for pedestrians, an enhanced streetscape and a safer, more
attractive neighbourhood.
Works will
include:
- footpath
renewals, kerb extensions, channelling work, road resurfacing
- installing
additional and better lighting and new street furniture
- upgrading
seating and rubbish bins.
What you can
expect
Footpath and
street resurfacing will take place in late 2010/2011. Works will include digging
up footpaths which will create some noise and restricted pedestrian access in
some streets in the vicinity of the stadium, however Auckland City Council will
ensure residents will have access to driveways at all times.
Car Parking
Consultation on improvements
to the residents’ parking scheme took place in 2007. Not all the changes
proposed could be implemented because of the need for changes to the legislation
controlling parking zones. Because the legislation will change later in 2010,
Auckland City Council is proposing to consult residents and businesses again to
make sure that the proposed parking zone is still appropriate.
What you can
expect
Auckland
City Council will consult further with residents and businesses in early 2010.
Bus and coach parking
During
RWC 2011 Eden Park will be a hive of activity, especially with the predicted
number of rugby fans travelling to the stadium on package coach tours.
The
current bus hub in the southwest corner of Eden Park will not be able to meet
expected demands. Consideration is being given to temporary bus and coach
parking areas close to the stadium, which could include New North Road,
Sandringham Road, Morningside Drive, Bond Street, and Great North Road.
Minor town centre improvements
Key
gateways presenting Auckland and Eden Park to the world during RWC 2011 are
Kingsland and Eden Valley town centres.
-
Kingsland
town centre will feature
prominently as an entertainment district with food and beverage outlets
frequented by both rugby patrons and visitors to the area as well as the
local community
-
Eden Valley
town centre will play a
vital role to spectators and patrons with food and beverage outlets
Some
minor and essential work will be carried out to these two centres to ensure a
safe and welcoming precinct for visitors and the community in the lead up and
during the tournament.
Works may include:
Footpath maintenance, minor town centre upgrades including updated street
furniture and amenities.
What
you can expect
Any
long-term upgrades of these centres will not be carried out before 2011.
Security
Auckland City Council is
upgrading security and safety facilities in the area to help monitor activity in
and around Eden Park Stadium and improve transport operations and traffic flow
around the area.
Works will
include:
Installation
of more CCTV cameras in and around the area to build on the existing network of
cameras already in place in the city.
What you can
expect
Additional
CCTV cameras will be installed in late 2010.
