Dominion Road transport and streetscape upgrade
Dominion Road is a major transport route stretching from
State Highway 20 to the CBD. During major events at Eden Park, Dominion Road is
critical for Auckland's transport network to function effectively.
The proposed upgrade will ensure this key transport route
can cope with major events at Eden Park, as well as Auckland's future growth.
To achieve this, sections of Dominion Road between Ian
McKinnon Drive and Lowery Avenue (at the southern end of Dominion Road), will be
widened to accommodate wider bus lanes, indented bus bays to help traffic flow
and better bus stop facilities.
Quality pavements, tree planting, new street lighting and
street furniture will make Dominion Road a safer and more enjoyable place to
live in and move through.
The benefits
- Efficient, alternative transport choices will lead to a cleaner and healthier
environment to live in.
- Wider
bus lanes will ensure buses, cycles and motorcycles experience as little
conflict with general traffic as possible.
- Indented bus bays mean buses will be able to pass other stationary buses without
entering general traffic lanes, making traffic flow more efficient.
- Streetscape improvements such as lighting, street furniture, trees and pavements
will make Dominion Road an attractive and safe place for people and businesses.
Approximate project timelines
- 2004 to
2016 - land purchases and construction (bus bays etc) staged over 12 years.
