Elliott Street is a special place
in the CBD. Located in the heart of the city and nestled between Queen,
Wellesley and Victoria streets, Elliott Street is an accessible
and an increasingly popular destination for people visiting, working and living
in the CBD.
The area is evolving as a destination with a distinctive
style for business, shopping and dining, making it a top priority for one of
Auckland City Council's CBD streetscape upgrades.
Planning the upgrade
In planning the upgrade, we asked local businesses, residents, retailers and other interested groups what they valued about the Elliott Street and Darby Street area. This feedback helped us develop objectives for both upgrades, which aim to:
- provide greater pedestrian priority
throughout the area and more space for people
- create a distinctive and popular destination
- improve spaces that support businesses,
provide more space for outdoor dining and encourage a variety of other
outdoor activities
- better connect the area with the surrounding
network of streets
- create high quality, attractive and durable
streets that contribute to a sustainable and maintainable CBD.
During the public consultation of the draft design a number of changes and refinements were identified which were incorporated into the final design.
The Elliott Street upgrade project is part of a 10-year programme to transform CBD streets and open spaces and create a great city. The cost of upgrading Elliott Street will be about $7.2 million. When complete, the area will be an enjoyable space where people can sit, relax, linger, dine, shop, and spend time.
Elliott Street a shared
space
The exciting concept of shared
space is being introduced in Elliott Street.
One typical element of shared
space is the removal of kerbs and the traditional distinction between footpath
and road. In a shared space, pedestrians have the right of way, though they must
be aware and have consideration for vehicles using the street.
Successful shared spaces provide:
- more space for pedestrians
- reduce and calm traffic
- support business and retail activity
- encourage other outdoor activity.
A number of other streets in the CBD are proposing to incorporate shared space.
