Grey Lynn Park recreation precinct

Background | Final concept plan | Process from here

Auckland City and the Western Bays Community Board are looking at the future enhancement and development of Grey Lynn Park as a 'recreation precinct'.

A recreation precinct is an area that is developed as a focal point for the community where a range of recreational activities are provided that offer both casual and organised activities for a diverse range of people.

The main entrance of Grey Lynn Park is located at 69-71 Williamson Avenue, Grey Lynn.

Background

A needs assessment for Grey Lynn Park was undertaken to help develop an understanding of the community's requirements and aspirations for the park, and of the park itself. Through this process, a range of issues and opportunities for the park were identified. Some of the key points included:

  • the need to address the retention and upgrade of existing buildings
  • the desire for additional planting, shade and artworks
  • further development of the pedestrian path network
  • upgrading park furnishings and playgrounds
  • the need to improve safety and lighting
  • strengthening the park entrances
  • the inadequacy of vehicular access and carparking
  • provision of additional activities.

Based on the needs assessment, two concept plans for the park were developed. These were available for public comment through a series of public displays, letterbox drops, a public meeting and an open day, with a good response received.

Feedback from the previous designs indicated that the community wanted to:

  • see a multi-use local facility on the site of the existing Richmond Rovers Rugby League clubrooms
  • consider the need to provide additional carparking
  • widen the internal access road
  • restrict access to the carparks during the hours of darkness
  • remove the proposed promenade
  • add additional planting, particularly species capable of attracting birds
  • keep the fitness stations
  • upgrade and provide additional park furniture
  • keep the flying fox and keep the skateboard ramp in it's present location
  • upgrade the playground facilities and surrounds to the paddling pool
  • provide additional/upgraded toilet facilities
  • provide additional art works throughout the park.

A refined design for the park was then developed and available for public comment. After analysing all comments received, a final concept plan was presented to the Western Bays Community Board and the Recreation and Events Committee for their approval.
