Final concept plan
The main features of the final concept plan include:
Entrance areas
The Williamson Avenue and Dryden Street entrance areas will be redeveloped to strengthen the 'sense of arrival' and advertise the presence of the park
through looking at the existing pedestrian paths and the surface treatment and also through having a consistent sign strategy. Other pedestrian entrances
will also be enhanced. A semi-dry wetland will be constructed within the Williamson Avenue entrance area.
Walkways
Additional paths will be formed along the western boundary to create circular walking opportunities within the park. Park furnishings such as seats and
litter bins will surround the pedestrian network. The concept plan provides for the commemoration of the western boundary which was the first gift of land
from Ngati Whatua to the Crown roughly coinciding with the Grey Lynn Park valley and Opoutukeha Stream (Cox's Creek) through the possible use of ceramic
inserts into the central walkway.
Buildings
The former athletics clubrooms will be demolished and a new multi-use venue will be constructed approximately on the site of the existing Richmond Rovers
Rugby League Clubrooms (which will be removed). This new building will incorporate facilities for the rugby league club, storage, changing facilities,
shelter, and multi-use rooms/facilities. The existing public conveniences in the centre of the park will be removed and incorporated into the proposed new
multi-use facility. New public conveniences will be installed in the park adjacent to Dryden Street.
Carparking and access
Additional parking will be provided along Dryden Street. The internal access road will be widened to enable two-way traffic, which will assist with
circulation of emergency vehicles when needed, with parking provided off it adjacent to the Number 1 field. The existing carpark in the centre of the park
near the clubrooms will be removed (access for service and emergency vehicles will remain). The promotion of carparking on adjoining streets is also proposed
- generally through the use of signage. It is also recommended that the opportunity for providing additional street parking on Rose Road be investigated.
The concept plan also makes provision for the Elgin Street vehicle entrance to be locked at night.
Planting
Additional planting will be undertaken throughout the park, with an emphasis on native species that attract bird life. The existing harakeke (flax area)
within Rose Gully will be expanded in terms of both size and diversity. The concept plan includes provision for the establishment of wetland areas in
appropriate parts of the park to utilise and treat surface run-off from the wider valley basin, for example, off Williamson Avenue.
Other amenity and recreational improvements
Other improvements to the park include:
- upgraded playground equipment, including drainage and surfacing
- additional skate facilities near the Dryden Street hard courts
- relocating the flying fox away from the Williamson Avenue entrance
- including a basketball hoop in the existing courts near Dryden Street and marking the courts out to accommodate tennis
- upgrading and increasing the fitness stations constructed throughout the park
- upgrading the surrounds of the paddling pool and reviewing the existing toilet facilities to facilitate dedicated pool facilities
- facilitating additional art features around the park
- upgrading existing and incorporating additional park furniture including seats, litter bins and barbeques
- providing historical interpretative information within the park and incorporating Pacific design detailing.
