Heard Park upgrade

Heard Park, located centrally on the corner of Parnell Road and Ruskin Street, has been earmarked for a makeover in order to provide a valuable community open space which reflects the character and needs of Parnell.

Public consultation was carried out for the project during February/March 2006. Of the two concept proposals put forward to the community there was overwhelming support for option 2, which included the removal of the existing schinus trees to allow for a pedestrian connection out of the park to Ruskin Street. There was also extensive feedback to incorporate a swing back into the concept and to retain open space and lawn for family use.

An amended plan including a swing was adopted by the Hobson Community Board at their April meeting.

Detail design on the project has been progressed with some improvements to the concept including a stronger connection to Ruskin Street through generous stepped access and simplification of the lawn and paved areas.

Arrow Civil Engineers Ltd started construction on 9 July 2007. Works were completed in November 2007, with reopening of the park coinciding with the opening of the redeveloped Heard Building.
