Communities living injury free chose the manuka tree as a representation of its kaupapa because the manuka is a
plant with nurturing and healing properties and as such has special significance for Maori and Pakeha alike.
Tane Mahuta, the god of the forest, calls manuka his special child because the low lying shrub acts as a gentle shelter to
nourish new forest. It protects the young and the vulnerable and allows them to grow strong and healthy.
The leaves, bark and flower of the manuka are used for a variety of medicinal purposes including the treatment of cuts,
scratches and abrasions, muscle and joint pain. It has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties.
The communities living injury free logo is an artistic interpretation of the manuka flower and leaf. The flower and
leaf have been drawn from a photograph of the plant.
