Karangahape Road streetscape upgrade
Project completion
In March 2006, the $3.5 million works were substantially
completed (tree planting was delayed until two further large london plane trees
could be sourced).
In October and November 2006, the trees were planted and
grates and tree guards installed, signifying the completion of Karangahape Road
- a project that began in April 2003.
Key objective:
- to improve the physical environment and enhance its unique character,
making it a better place for people to shop and spend time.
Key outcomes:
- seven additional london plane trees
- five were salvaged from Fanshawe Street when it was widened
in 2005
- two were rescued from a roundabout widening in Panmure in
September 2006
- new footpath paving
- northern footpath 2m wider, between Liverpool and Symonds
streets
- upgraded street lighting
- new rubbish bins and seats
- guard rails for increased pedestrian safety
- three traffic control cabinets on the northern side became
painted artworks.
The construction stages
The upgrade was completed in three stages to minimise the
disruption to businesses, pedestrians and traffic.
Stage one:
- began in 2003
- covered areas between Pitt Street and Queen Street
- involved new paving, landscaping, lighting and street
furniture.
Stage two:
- began early 2004
- covered areas between Pitt Street and motorway overbridge,
opposite St Kevins Arcade and outside development on corner of Karangahape
Road/Queen Street
- involved new paving, vegetation, street furniture and a
new signalised pedestrian crossing outside St Kevins Arcade (funded separately).
Stage three:
- began in April 2005
- covered area between Queen Street and Symonds Street
- involved new paving, vegetation, lighting, street
furniture and an improved pedestrian island on the corner of Karangahape
Road/Queen Street (funded separately)
Into the future strategy
Upgrading Karangahape Road is just one of the key
projects supporting Auckland City Council's focus to balance the needs of the
city with the experiences of its people.
Planning and design has been
completed in conjunction with the Karangahape Road Business Association.
