Overview
To compliment the
Auckland Art Gallery
development,
the council has started upgrading Kitchener Street between Wellesley Street and
Khartoum Place in early 2011.

Project benefits
Features of the upgrade
include:
- widening the footpaths for improved pedestrian access
- installing high quality, attractive and durable street paving
- lowering the street to provide for the new Auckland Art Gallery
entrance
- increasing the road's safety by levelling its current curved shape
- calming traffic and creating greater pedestrian priority by reducing the
southern end of the road to one lane and installing a raised pedestrian
crossing
area in
front of the gallery
- providing short-term car parking.
Works programme
Construction commenced in March
2011 and will be completed by mid 2011, in time for the re-opening of the developed
Auckland Art Gallery.
In order to reduce disruption during construction, pedestrian access will be
maintained and hoardings and signage will be erected around the work site to
minimise dust and noise.
The council is also committed to on-going
communication with the local businesses and residents to minimise the impact of
the works.
