Kohimarama Beach esplanade reserve redevelopment
See also Kohimarama Beach seawall protection
Auckland City allocated funding to the redevelopment of the Kohimarama Beach esplanade reserve to protect the natural environment from
pedestrian damage and enhance the area. $464,424 was spent in 2004 to upgrade the eastern area of the reserve, and an additional $250,000
was approved in September 2004 to enhance the western part of the reserve.
The redevelopment involved the construction of a beachfront timber boardwalk (220 metres long and 2 metres wide), the installation of
new street furniture (including a drinking fountain, seats and bins), low-level lighting, feature paving, mulching and underplanting of the
existing pohutukawa trees with coastal native species and the construction of concrete garden edges.
The esplanade reserve redevelopment will complement and enhance the recently completed sea wall protection project and sand replenishment
works on Kohimarama beach.
All works were completed by March 2005.
