The area of Lorne Street directly in front of the Central City Library (between Wellesley Street and Rutland Street) has recently been completed.
The remaining areas of Rutland Street and Lorne Street (Rutland Street to Mayoral Drive) are scheduled for construction between November 2011 and May 2012.
Planning the upgrade
This is the second stage of upgrade works on Lorne Street, following on from
stage one, which
saw the section of Lorne Street between Victoria Street and Wellesley Street upgraded
between 2005 and 2007.
In planning the upgrade we asked local stakeholders what they thought about the
area and how it could be improved. This feedback helped form the project objectives,
which aim to:
- create a distinctive and popular destination
- better connect the area with the surrounding network of streets
- create a high quality, attractive and durable streetscape that contributes
to a sustainable and maintainable CBD
- create a more pedestrian friendly environment
- improve spaces that provide for a variety of activities and support business.
The cost of the Lorne Street stage two upgrade will be approximately $10.9 million
and is funded from the CBD targeted rate. The project is part of a
10-year programme
to transform CBD streets and open spaces aimed at creating an urban centre that
will attract a lively mix of business, residential and cultural activity.
