Project overview
The CBD to Airport link, which we will implement in March 2010, will enable faster and more efficient travel along Manukau Road. It will encourage airport traffic to use Manukau Road as the main route instead of adjacent side streets.
This project is part of the our commitment to provide Auckland's growing population with quality infrastructure and more sustainable travel options to help combat traffic congestion. Manukau Road is a core part of the regional passenger transport network and one of the region's Quality Transit Network (QTN) routes.
Features of the project include:
- the introduction of a weekday evening clearway (4pm to 6pm) for city-bound traffic on Manukau Road, in addition to the existing weekday morning clearway (7am to 9am)
- extending the existing clearways in each direction for some sections of Manukau Road between Pah Road and Green Lane West to improve traffic flow during clearway hours
- removal of some parking from three small sections of Manukau Road.

Consultation and changes to our proposal
The majority of the 236 respondents to last year's consultation for the project were in favour of the proposal. Some aspects of the project have changed to take into account feedback received, these are as follows:
- Right hand turning bans: 39 per cent of respondents raised concerns about safety and accessibility to the proposed right turn restrictions at Claude Road, Gardner Road and Onslow Avenue. With this in mind, the proposed right hand bans have been removed from this project.
- Parking issues: Council will monitor the impact of the above changes on Manukau Road and side roads to see whether further amendments to parking times are necessary.
- Pedestrian refuges: We have decided not to implement pedestrian refuge islands due to the difficulty in fitting the proposed islands in a safe manner without interfering with driveway accesses. Crossing facilities on Manukau Road will continue to be investigated by the local ward engineer.
