Margaret Griffen Park upgrade
Auckland City has developed a concept plan for Margaret Griffen Park. The
concept plan outlines a staged process for upgrading the park's amenities and
using natural processes to treat stormwater.
The plan proposes to develop the natural hydrological processes that effect
the park by feeding stormwater from the fields, access driveway and carpark into
a rain garden and a swale (planted
drains) system. This will allow for stormwater to be treated before entering the
Whau Stream.
The rain garden will be planted with native plant species and will allow
sediment and other impurities to filter out of the stormwater.
The first stage of the concept plan implementation - construction of a
walkway around the playing fields - was completed in 2007. The second stage
involving construction and planting of the rain garden will begin when funding
becomes available.
