In 1998 Auckland City Council endorsed the concept of a premier park at Monte
Cecilia Park. Since then, a number of land purchases have established a current
park area of more than 14.31 hectares and includes the historic Pah Homestead.
The park was named by the council in 2004
following an invitation to local and wider community. The park features
outstanding established grounds with notable trees, architecture and cultural
history. It is a premier park in the city and in the long term, the council aims
to see it developed as a park of regional significance, similar in stature and
maturity to Albert Park, Cornwall Park and the Auckland Domain.
In 2007, following extensive public consultation, Auckland City Council
endorsed a master plan to guide the future development of the park.
Key themes raised by the community, which guided the development of the
master plan, were:
- conserving the park and homestead as a living slice of Auckland's
history
- retaining the park's peaceful character
- exploring uses for arts and culture.
Some of the issues identified include the need for car parking and bus
access, better access generally to and within the park, and higher visibility
from the road with frontage to surrounding roads. Not all of these issues can be
addressed in the short term or within the park's current 14.31 hectares. The
council envisages increasing the size of the park as opportunities arise.
It is open to the public and is located between Mt Albert, Hillsborough,
Korma and Herd Roads.
