Background
In October 2008, Mountain Fountain was removed from Aotea Square, ahead of the
square's redevelopment. It is to be relocated to another location around May 2010.
Over the last month Auckland City Council asked the public which site they would prefer
to see Mountain Fountain displayed at.
The survey has now closed and we are collating the results. We will analyse
them together with input from the Advisory Panel
for Public Art and the Urban Design Panel. The Arts, Culture and Recreation
committee will then make the final decision at their meeting on 11 November
2009.
Location options
After discussion with the artist, Terry Stringer, there are two options for the
new location of Mountain Fountain:
- The grounds of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell
- Selwyn Reserve, Mission Bay
1. The grounds of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell
The fountain would pick up on the established architecture of the cathedral
and the forecourt design, integrating it within the existing paving layout. It
would also compliment Professor Toy's original vision for the cathedral, with an
artwork beside it. The sculpture would have a relatively prominent location,
whilst leaving the forecourt clear. The two sides with water would face the
forecourt and St Stephen's Avenue.

2. Selwyn Reserve, Mission Bay
This concept would mirror Rangitoto Island in the backdrop. The impression of
uplift is enhanced by paving stepping up in an irregular manner towards the
sculpture. The location would maintain a significant amount of grassed open
space in the immediate area, with the water cascades facing the reserve and
Tamaki Drive.
