What the plan has achieved
A number of improvements from the master plan have already been implemented
following consultation with key stakeholders: the museum, the Returned Services
Association and the Historic Places Trust. The improvements already completed as
part of the renewals project are:
- changes to traffic circulation and the removal of vehicle access from
the front of the museum;
- reconstruction of the cenotaph steps;
- new cenotaph lighting;
- upgrade of other lighting around the museum; and
- the installation of signage to highlight the consecrated areas.
Further improvements
The draft master plan proposes a number of further improvements to the museum
and cenotaph surrounds, including:
- creation of a large paved area across the forecourt of the museum, above the
court of honour, with steps and seating
- removal of parking from below the court of honour and replacement with a water
feature or art work that may include additional armed services memorials
- additional footpaths along the lower part of Cenotaph Road below the court of
honour, and also connecting the museum with Maunsell Street
- removal of the dying pine to the west of the cenotaph and new complementary tree
planting
- improved lighting of the museum surrounds.
