Newmarket Park remediation

Introduction | Background | Project update | Project documents and plans

Introduction

Auckland Council has carried out remediation and stabilisation works at Newmarket Park, Parnell.

The remediation and stabilisation works were completed on 24 May 2011 and a new contract is now in place for final site tidy-up with completion expected in April 2012.

Background

Newmarket Park is a closed landfill with a southern slope that was historically prone to slips. The remediation works were carried out to address ongoing public health and safety and environmental risks.

The remediation works involved:

  • removal of the existing vegetation on the southern slope
  • excavation and rebuilding of the slope
  • revegetation with native plants and trees.

Detailed ecological mitigation and landscaping plans for the site were consulted on during 2009 and these plans were implemented.

Following the completion of bulk earthworks in May 2011, the southern slope has been landscaped with more than 10,000 native trees and plants to create habitat for wildlife and provide a high-quality environment for park users to enjoy.

The planting includes groves of large feature trees, including kauri and tanekaha, tree ferns, and canopy trees such as rimu, totara, kahikatea, kohekohe, puriri, tawa and taraire.

Improved walking paths have been built through the reforested southern slope to link the lower access track with the main park area.

The council is continuing to take action to reduce potential impacts on wildlife and to improve native forest areas nearby. This action includes animal pest control, weed removal and enrichment planting at Ayr Street Reserve, and the already completed transfer of native lizards from Newmarket Park to Ayr Street Reserve.

Prior to major earthworks in early and mid 2010, in accordance with Environmental Management Best Practice guidelines, considerable effort was made by restoration ecologists to relocate (transplant) native lizards from Newmarket Park's southern slope to nearby Ayr Street Reserve. This project included the relocation of Copper Skink (Nationally Protected Species) and Ornate Skink (Nationally Protected Threatened species) populations.

Log refuge piles have since been created amongst the plantings on the Newmarket Park southern slope to provide long-term habitat for these native skink species upon their return.
