Onehunga Bay Reserve and Lagoon

Overview
| Onehunga Bay Reserve draft concept plan
Overview
Onehunga Bay Lagoon was formed in the late 1970s as part of the motorway development that separated the body of water from the Manukau
Harbour. The development incorporated control or sluice gates which enabled the tide to be 'impounded' and be unaffected by tidal cycles
enabling its use for water based recreation throughout the day.
This enabled the lagoon to be used for water activities such as model boats, wind surfing, outrigger canoeing, waka training, Waterwise,
rowing, kayaking and swimming.
Water quality in the lagoon has been significantly improved thanks to a successful sea lettuce management programme undertaken by the council
from mid 2006.
Concept plans have been drawn up for the upgrade of the lagoon and surrounding reserve. Physical works will start once the development of the
foreshore and State Highway 20 have been decided upon. See State Highway 20 for further
