New tree planting proposal

1.0 Introduction
The last remaining pine tree was removed from the summit of One Tree Hill Domain (Maungakiekie) on 26 October 2000.
The One Tree Hill Domain (Maungakiekie) Management Plan (1998) policy expects that a replacement tree be planted when necessary. The next planting season
is late autumn to early spring 2001 (ie May to August).
This proposal paper recommends, with reasons, the preferred planting option, design and methodology for the planting on the summit of the One Tree Hill
Domain (Maungakiekie).
The recommendation is the result of a review of the cultural and historical context and assessment of the relevant statutory planning criteria and technical
(landscape, arboricultural, archaeological and engineering) reports. Feedback from consultation with key interest groups and from the general public has also
been taken into consideration.
The proposal emphasises the three key criteria considered important for success: species, size (at time of planting), and source of the replacement tree.
The key criteria in design are protection of the heritage values of the site, environmental and establishment issues, and the potential for tree growth and
development of form for landscape effect.
A final specification for planting is not detailed in this report. This will be dependent on the outcome of the resource consent application and will be
covered in a Planting and Maintenance Programme expected to be required as a condition of the resource consent.
