Introduction
Orakei Basin is a unique feature of Auckland City Council as it is the only fully impounded body of seawater in the region allowing
water-based recreation at all tides.
This allows the basin to be well used by the community and various groups, in particular for activities such as waterskiing and sailing. The Akaranga Young Mariners, Auckland Water Ski Club, and Orakei Sea Scouts all have their clubrooms on the basin's shoreline.
See Orakei Basin usage
for more information.
Unfortunately the gates that control the water level in the basin are leaking badly and need to be replaced. We now have the necessary resource consents to continue impounding the basin and to repair the gates, and work is progressing
on the detailed design of the new gates.
Due to the planned electrification of the rail lines above the gates, significant consultation with OnTrack is required in terms of the
detailed design of the gates and construction methodology.
This is progressing well and we hope to have the design finalised ready for lodging the building consent application in May 2008, with
works planned for October 2008. Key parties will be notified prior to works commencing.
