Works progress
Critical maintenance works on the gates have recently been completed to keep
them operational prior to the long term remedial works occurring. These maintenance
works involved renovating two of the five mechanisms that raise and lower the gates,
and repairing worn sections of the hydraulic lines.
The long term works to stop the leaking will involve either rebuilding the gates
or replacing them with a pre-fabricated system. The final option will be determined
by a number of factors including cost. Prices for the supply and installation of
the new gates are currently being sought.
We have undertaken temporary work in order to maintain the water level within
the basin. No further works in the basin are planned until the start of
permanent works, which are now forecast for 2010.
The majority of the work will be limited to the area around the gates and will
have minimal disruption to the rest of the basin. For the period of work, access
to the ramp next to the gates will be restricted. Most of the work will be undertaken
during low tides, and will not require the basin to be emptied for extended periods.
Additional flushing days may be required to allow access to the underside of the
gates and to fix the base plates. These will be co-ordinated with the Auckland Water
Ski-club to avoid conflict with scheduled events.
The outcome will be a significant reduction in the leakage rate through the gates,
minimising the reduction in water depth between flushes during the water-ski events.
The experience gained and investigation undertaken will contribute to the knowledge
and preparation for the permanent works.
