Motions Creek stormwater upgrade

Project background

The Motions Creek catchment is 456 hectares of commercial and residential development serviced by a complex network of separate stormwater and combined wastewater and stormwater drainage systems.

These systems have a number of deficiencies that require significant investment over many years to resolve. Under wet weather conditions drainage capacity is frequently exceeded resulting in isolated habitable floor flooding with hotspots centred around Ivanhoe Road, along the north-western motorway corridor and the commercial area of Nikau Street, Shaddock Street and Boston Road.

The map below illustrates the predicted flooding the will occur in the catchment during large storm events of 1 in 10 and 1 in 100 years. The objective of the new pipe system is to mitigate this flooding.

The combined system contains a significant number of system relief overflows that frequently discharge a combination of stormwater and wastewater to Motions Creek during rainfall.

Project implementation

The resolution of these issues hinge upon the installation of new stormwater pipes to augment current system capacity. The increased capacity will reduce habitable floor flooding and facilitate Metrowater reducing wastewater overflow discharges to Motions Creek.

The development of the Motions Creek Catchment Management Plan began in 1991 and the completed plan and associated supporting material were submitted for ARC approval in 1996. A comprehensive consent was granted in May 2000.

The new Motions Creek main stormwater pipeline, currently under construction, will augment existing stormwater drainage capacity to protect habitable floors from flooding up to the 100 year rainfall event.

The entire pipeline, extending from Western Springs Park to Normanby Road in the upper catchment, will cost approximately $20M and take around 5 years to construct. The new pipeline began to alleviate habitable floor flooding upon completion of stage 2 in 2001/02, however full utilisation of the pipe will require rationalisation of stormwater entering existing drainage systems. Removal of stormwater from the existing combined system or wastewater separation will reduce wastewater inputs to the creek.

The project has progressed between the outfall and the top of the catchment and is comprised of 13 stages of works. The final stage connecting Shaddock Street to Water Street is expected to be completed around 2009.
