Creating a Stronger Auckland - Strengthening Auckland's Regional Governance

Auckland City Council has been working with the other councils in the Auckland region, the Auckland Regional Council and central government to look at:

  • which level of government (national, regional, or local) is best placed to make decisions for the region
  • whether there is a need for any structural changes
  • whether any changes are required to local authority representation and the relationships between central, regional and local government.

It is not a new discussion. Councils in Auckland have talked for some time about improving the way local, regional and central government operates in the region. There is a recognition that Auckland operates as a single city-region environmentally, socially and economically and that its growth pressures are being felt regionally and need to be managed regionally. It is not about amalgamating councils.

We want to achieve:

  • better value for money for Aucklanders through improving service standards, greater consistency and reducing costs
  • one vision for the future, unified leadership and one voice for discussions with central government on regional issues
  • making decisions about more interrelated issues in a more integrated way, more quickly and without relitigation
  • delivering on decisions once they are made, including providing more certainty about funding and service delivery
  • facilitating local democracy and diversity and helping to address emerging local social problems.

More information is available on the process, the discussion document and the timelines on the Stronger Auckland website.
