Stage 1 designs
On 28 September, Auckland City Council announced the winning entries from
more than 150 imaginative ideas entered in the competition.
The judges decided that four winning entries demonstrated both design
innovation and potential technical feasibility. Each received NZ$2,000 prize
money and were been invited to work with teams of
technical experts to develop their concepts in Stage 2.

Special commendations

striking ideas. Each entrant was awarded $500 in prize money.
Judging panel report
The panel appreciated the diverse range of ideas and approaches represented
by the 155 Stage 1 concept design submissions, and the inventive proposals from
a number of entrants.
Although this open design competition did not require design proposals to
demonstrate technical resolution, a number of entries were considered to be
capable of adaptation and development, as a basis for realistic proposals.
A number of proposals sought to achieve bridges that would provide a clear
opening well in excess of the required 40 metres. This resulted in bridge
structures of heroic scale when in the open position. However, the panel
considered that many of these proposals would also be effective if designed for
clear spans of lesser size.
The judging panel selected four 'finalist' designs that demonstrated both design
innovation and potential technical feasibility to a standard that warranted
their possible further development in Stage 2 of the process.
A further three designs were considered to be deserving of special mention on
the basis of the striking ideas that they advanced. The panel offers the
following comments on each of these submissions.
See the judges' comments for each design on the winning designs pages.
